If you’re anything like me, you’re wondering how to lose the after holiday weight gain you experience each year. I head into the holidays with lots of plans to resist Christmas cookies and stay active. Unfortunately, the temptation and the colder temperatures often result in a few extra pounds that I don’t want to keep. Since the holidays are firmly over and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, now is the time.

After Holiday Weight Gain

I have found that the best way to deal with weight loss is to deal with it now. Don’t put it off until tomorrow or next week or next month. There will always be a holiday or family gathering that will tempt you into eating more than you should.

Drink More Water

Not only will drinking more water flush toxins out of your system, but it will also help you feel full in between meals. Resisting snacks is something that many people find challenging. If you’re trying to lose holiday weight gain, you’ll want to minimize any snacking that you do.

Be Realistic

Be realistic about what you can do to lose holiday weight gain. You’re not going to live for two months on carrot sticks and water, and you’re probably not going to exercise for two hours a day. Set goals that you have some chance of reaching, so you don’t give up.

Don’t Drink Calories

One of the easiest ways to drop a few pounds quickly is to stop drinking your calories. Have you ever looked at how many calories is in a latte or a glass of soda? Even things like fruit smoothies and coffee creams have quite a few calories in them. Eliminate calories that you’re drinking and instead choose water, black tea or coffee.

Eat More Protein

If you don’t feel full, you will be tempted to snack. While you may have good intentions to eat just a salad for lunch, the lack of protein will probably leave you hungry in an hour. Increase your protein intake by adding lean meats and hard boiled eggs. Protein will help you feel full longer.

Move Daily

Even on your busiest day, it’s important to move daily. Go outside for a walk up the street or run up and down the stairs a few times. Throw a ball with the kids or head out and go sledding. Either way, try to add in at least 15 minutes of movement into every day.

Reduce or Eliminate Carbs

Carbohydrates are one of the big reasons that people gain weight over the holidays and at other times of the year. Extra pasta, bread, rice, cookies, and desserts won’t do you any good. Try to reduce or eliminate these from your diet. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.
